Why 55 cm CollieBall for Border Collies, Cattle Dogs & Kelpies?
The 55 cm CollieBall is the most popular size we sell — and for good reason. It's the right match for the three most common working herding breeds in Australia: the Border Collie, the Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler), and the Australian Kelpie. These breeds share a similar build — medium frame, athletic, around 45–55 cm at the withers — and they share an even more important trait: a working drive that doesn't switch off just because they're at home.
A bored Border Collie or Kelpie will find its own job, which is rarely the job you want. Herding the kids around the yard, nipping ankles, fence-running, obsessive shadow-chasing — these are all symptoms of unspent herding drive. The 55 cm CollieBall gives that drive a healthy outlet: a large, bouncy target the dog can chase and "herd" for as long as it wants, without damaging the toy or itself.
Breeds that fit the 55 cm CollieBall:
- Border Collie (standard size)
- Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler, Red Heeler)
- Australian Kelpie (working and show)
- Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog
- Standard Poodle (active individuals)
- Cocker Spaniel
- Smooth Collie and Bearded Collie
How to confirm 55 cm is the right size: measure your dog from the withers (highest point of the shoulder blade) to the ground. If your dog stands between 45 cm and 55 cm at the withers and weighs roughly 14–25 kg, the 55 cm CollieBall is the right fit. Border Collies and Kelpies in this range can't get their jaw open wide enough to grip the ball, which is what keeps the ball intact and the dog safe.
Note for taller individuals: if your Border Collie is at the upper end of the breed standard (over 55 cm at the withers) or you have a particularly strong-jawed Cattle Dog, consider sizing up to the 75 cm — when in doubt, size up.
