Why 45 cm CollieBall for Corgis & Small Herding Dogs?
Corgis are herding dogs in a small dog body. Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis were bred to nip at cattle heels, which means they share the same instincts as Border Collies and Australian Shepherds — they want to chase, control, and contain movement. The challenge for Corgi owners is that most herding toys are sized for larger breeds, leaving Corgis without a safe outlet for that drive.
The 45 cm (18") CollieBall is designed specifically for breeds with a shoulder height of around 25–35 cm. At this size, the ball is large enough that a Corgi cannot get its jaw around it — which is exactly what makes CollieBall safe. Our herding balls work on a simple principle: the ball must be too big for the dog to grasp with its mouth. A 45 cm sphere achieves this for small breeds while still being light enough for them to push, nudge, and chase.
Breeds that fit the 45 cm CollieBall:
- Pembroke Welsh Corgi
- Cardigan Welsh Corgi
- Toy Australian Shepherd
- Miniature Australian Shepherd (smaller individuals)
- French Bulldog (active individuals only — supervise closely)
- Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie)
- Small Poodle and Cavoodle
How to confirm 45 cm is the right size: measure your dog from the highest point of the shoulder blade (the withers) straight down to the ground. If your dog stands between 25 cm and 35 cm at the withers, the 45 cm CollieBall is the safest match. If your Corgi is on the larger end of the breed standard or you have a Cardigan Welsh Corgi (which tends to be sturdier), consider sizing up to the 55 cm to leave room for safe play as the dog grows or gains confidence.
